Q : Is driveway sealing important & why ?

A : Simply put, seal coating a surface ( when using the proper product )  is beneficial for the fact that it acts as a protective coating.
Like Sunscreen to our skin  or Rust Proofing to a vehicle, these products provide the best quality protection from the every day elements, climate changes & day to day wear & tear. Having the proper seal coating applied to your surface will not only protect it, but it will also extend its life span & dramatically slow down the wearing / oxidization process.
An unsealed surface will lead to expensive repairs or even worse, expensive replacement costs.
Keeping your asphalt, concrete & stone surfaces protected, definitely saves money in the long run.
Finally, seal coatings enhance the appearance of the surface. Inturn they reward your property with fantastic curb appeal & leave you with Pride of Ownership.

Q : How often should you seal a driveway, patio, walkway ?

A : Sealers generally take almost 2 full years to fully extract from pavement, interlock & concrete surfaces. To maintain a level of protection on stone type surfaces, some of our clients call in for touch up coats or quick "refresher coat" once a year which is also fine.
It is very important to make sure that there is not too much sealant on a surface. The old saying "too much of a good thing is never good"    pertains to seal coatings as well.
** To ensure that you get the longest life from the product you have put on, it's most important to keep it clean at all times **

Q : What is the difference between Oil Based Sealer & Acrylic Based Sealer ?

A : Oil based sealers are designed to penetrate through the surface of asphalt. Being able to penetrate allows it to act as a stain rather than a paint. Oil based products are resiliant to chemical spills (gas, antifreeze & other fluids) & at the same time the product replenishes the pavement with its natural component. This also allows asphalt to have a little more flexibility in freeze / thaw weather conditions.

Acrylic Sealer / "roll on type"  sealants are designed to sit directly on the surface. This type of sealant acts as a mask, not allowing asphalt to breath. The coating itself (depending on the grade / quality) will still be affective in resisting spills, however, being a surface setting the product they do tend to flake, crack & peel due to drying out quickly from being in the sun all day. Acrylic sealants also tend to be more slippery in wet conditions.

Q : Should I seal my Interlock Stone / Concrete Surface ?

A : It is recommended that all Pavement Surfaces (asphalt, interlock stone, concrete, natural stone etc), have seal coatings applied regularly. Having a sealant applied, is the only form of protection you can offer to your surface.

Did you know :  Asphalt, Concrete, Interlock & Stone products can suffer & lose 10% overall strength + color in a single year ?
Sealing your surface will not only protect the product overall, but it also plays a big role in prolonging the life span. Sealant also enhances & captures the natural beauty of the stones, their colors & appearance.

Surfaces can be left in a  matt,  semi-gloss or  high gloss finish. All sealants should have a non-slip agent mixed in, which leaves a sand paper like feel to the surface.
Surfaces should always remain safe for usage & year round enjoyment.

Q : How do I keep weeds & grass from growing through my interlock stonework ? Should I use Polymeric Sand ?

A :
Weeds, grass, moss & other types of vegetation do tend to growth between interlock stonework especally when there is no jointing sand between the stones. Many homeowners make the mistake of not replenishing their interlock with polymeric sand. Polymeric Sand is a type of sand that becomes very hard with the addition of water. After powerwashing a stone surface, allow the are to dry properly or 24 - 36 hours. After ensuring that all the joints beween the paver / interlock stones are fully dried & clean of all dirt & debris, is the ideal time to have the polymeric joint sand installed. On a yearly basis, is it wise to check on the joint sand for cracks or seperation, applying more sand as needed will ensure that the joints are filled properly leaving them less likely to accept weed growth.

Properly filled joints between stone pavers also help ensure that little to no water gets underneath the stonework. It is very important to make sure that all depressed areas be repaired & re-levelled before applying such a hard type sand. If you have water pooling in certain areas of you existing patio, walkway or driveway, these are signs that the mentioned repairs are needed.
